Structure

Properties

Appearance    (1), white paste; or soft solid; or solid; (2), colorless to pale yellow liquid or viscous liquid.

Solubility    soluble in water.

Stability    stable. Stable to acid, alkali, hard water.

Risk    Liquid form: irritation, low irritation to skin, eye.

GHS (Rev.10) label:

Ecology    may be hazardous to environment. Water body should be given special attention.

Biodegradability    biodegradable.

Characteristics    excellent cleansing, emulsifying, dispersing, foaming, foam stabilizing, wetting, solubilizing abilities. Resistance to high concentrations of alkali. Resistance to oxidants. Resistance to high temperature. Good compatibility. Can be compounded with cationic surfactants without affecting each other. Mild surfactant. Can reduce irritation of other surfactants. Under acidic condition, do not affect cleansing, foaming effects. Performance varies with EO number.

Note    (1), 1,4-dioxane generated during polyether preparation: probable carcinogen. However, can be acceptable when concentration of 1,4-dioxane is less than 30ppm or less.

(2), Can be used in children products.

Synthesis

(1), Chloroacetic acid process (Discontinuous process)

Obtained that PEG tridecyl ether react with chloroacetic acid, sodium hydroxide.

The residual amount of sodium chloroacetate should be controlled in this process.

(2), Direct oxidation process (Continuous process)

Under the action of catalyst, PEG tridecyl ether is directly oxidized and neutralized by sodium hydroxide, then obtained.

The advantage of this process is that the final product does not contain sodium chloroacetate and sodium chloride.
